Matt’s Approach:

I see every piece of furniture that I work on as unique and beautiful…even the “ugly ducklings” that come into my shop leave looking like beautiful swans!  All the work I do in bringing new life to furniture is done by hand, by me…that means I’m putting MY name, My reputation on each piece.  I take that very seriously, and am committed to delivering to you only the highest quality of craftsmanship.  With nearly 15 years in the industry, I’m confident that I can deliver the results you desire in giving your upholstered furniture a new lease on life.

  • If necessary, I will take a chair or sofa to the frame, to make any structural repairs.
  • When I can, I will try to re-use the original padding, keeping it out of the landfill, and saving you money.
  • My goal is for you to be thrilled with the new life of your freshly re-upholstered furniture, and to feel like a genius for having me do the work.

Meet Matt...the Upholsterizer

In addition to spending time with my beautiful wife, Kelly, and our 4 kids, I also enjoy hunting, BBQing, watching 49ers football, brewing beer, working on my classic pick-up, and planning and executing projects around the house.  I’m an entrepreneur, and love to hear the stories folks have about how they took a risk and started a business or followed a dream!  Whatever the dream is that’s in your heart, I encourage you to go for it!

Matt’s Story:

In 2003 I was in my late twenties and looking for a trade.  I took a job as an apprentice in an upholstery shop in Livingston, MT.  I’ve always loved working with my hands and have an eye for detail, so I took to upholstery quickly.  I worked there for nearly 2 years.  When the boss decided to retire, he offered to sell me his business.  I saw a fantastic opportunity for a young man to own a business in a trade where most everyone else would be looking to retire soon.  So, I bought Upholstery by Max, and moved the business to Bozeman, and after a year or so, changed the name to Matt Merry Upholstery.  It was very humble beginnings working out of my single car garage, but I was always close to home and my family if they needed me.  When the economy took a downturn in 2008/09, we closed the doors to the shop and moved our family to Redding, CA.  There I had a full-time job, and was also able to work on an as needed basis at an upholstery shop.  It was great to keep my skills sharp, and to learn so many valuable tricks of the trade from the master upholsterers that worked there.  I think of it as a continuing education time in the trade.  In 2016, we moved back to the Gallatin Valley.  We are so thankful to be back home in Montana, and close to family.  We’ve settled in the community of Manhattan and set down some roots.  My wife, Kelly, graduated from Manhattan High School and she has always wanted to live here again.  We love our little town!  Soon after we moved back, I was asked by a former customer if I was going to do upholstery again.  Since the home we bought has a large detached garage, I thought why not.  So I  have started Matt Merry Upholstery back up.  As of March 7, 2017 I’ve been back to full-time upholstery and love it!
